item

Keep in mind the guidelines mentioned in part 1 of this post, such as warming up your hands if cold, and stopping any exercise if it causes pain or discomfort or any worsening of symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Here are some more exercises that can help to prevent or ease carpal tunnel and could well help prevent having to undergo more invasive therapy such as steroid injections and perhaps even surgery.

The major problem of the condition called carpal tunnel is the compression of the median nerve and consequent motor and sensory disturbance of the area.

To ease can correct the problem existing in the median nerve, perform the following exercise –

Stretch out your fingers, while keeping the arm straight at the elbow. Now bending your little finger and the thumb bring the finger pads together to touch one another.
Apply pressure with the finger and thumb and hold for about 10 counts and then return the fingers to their position, repeat this about 5 times and then repeat the same procedure with the other hand.

Try to do it a couple of times a day particularly if you are continuing to use the affected hand at work.

Apart from regular stretching exercises of the hand, you can also incorporate the following habits into your daily activities to help reduce the repetitive movements that cause stress build up –

Try and rest the affected arm as far as possible and try to use the other arm more.
Make sure that the position of your arms while working is optimum – neither too far nor to close to the body and that the wrists are not in a down bent position.

Learn to use keyboard short cuts that will let your hands continue to be on the keyboard and not have to keep going back and forth to the mouse. Windows has plenty of short cuts that you will find very useful – For instance Control + S is Save, Control A is select all, Control X is cut, Control V is paste, Control Z is undo, Control Y is redo and so on.

Controlling diet and doing more exercise to get to a normal weight will not only help your overall health, it will also help with symptoms of carpal tunnel.

Switch hands when possible, and take frequent breaks, changing positions while working.
Give proper rest to the wrist when working and resting and consider wearing a brace even when working.
